I am inspired by cloth, wood, glass, metal, paint, and many other materials, both man-made and natural, but a passion for clay grounds me in my craft as a potter. As well as a desire to make things, I am committed to nurturing a love of the arts and of the handmade, both in myself and others.

The source of my patterns and designs is a desire to create real or illusory depth by constructing layers. I choose shapes that will animate the surfaces of my forms. Using wax as a resist, I produce multiple, overlapping layers, creating windows and screens on my pots.

Vegetables, fruit, flowers, plants, fish, reptiles, and animal fur inspire my designs, but my choice of color is often intuitive. In my studio, I select from hues of red, yellow, and orange, partly to counter the grays, browns, and whites of long, cold Maine winters, and I construct my surfaces to suggest a sensation, a flavor, or a locale
